For those who love the Camino, the Via Francigena is Italy’s great pilgrimage to Rome.
Walk the final section of the Via Francigena from Orvieto to Rome, crossing forests, volcanic lakes, medieval towns, ancient roads and the countryside of Lazio before arriving at St. Peter’s Basilica.
All roads may lead to Rome, but few arrive with the beauty, depth and sense of history of the Via Francigena. This 8 day journey follows the last section of one of Europe’s great pilgrimage routes, crossing the countryside of Lazio through forests, ancient roads, medieval towns, volcanic lakes and Etruscan landscapes before reaching the Eternal City.
Our journey begins in Orvieto, one of central Italy’s most dramatic hill towns, perched high on volcanic rock and crowned by its magnificent cathedral. From here, we continue south through Montefiascone, where pilgrims once followed the ancient Via Cassia and looked toward Rome with every step. The road carries us through landscapes shaped by Romans, Etruscans, medieval pilgrims, farmers, monks and travelers of every kind.
This final section of the Via Francigena is especially meaningful because it leads to the Testimonium, the pilgrim certificate received in Rome. But the power of the journey is not only in the arrival. It is in the slow approach: the shaded paths, the old paving stones, the quiet villages, the hazelnut groves, the volcanic lake of Vico, and the green countryside that still surrounds Rome more closely than many visitors imagine.
Along the way, we discover Viterbo’s medieval quarter with a local guide who calls the city home, walk through the wooded Cimini Mountains, pause near Lake Vico, and pass through Sutri’s remarkable archaeological area, with its Etruscan amphitheater and ancient rock cut tombs. Each day brings us closer to Rome, but the journey remains intimate, rural and full of unexpected beauty.
The final walking day is unforgettable. From Monte Mario, we see the great dome of St. Peter’s for the first time. Then we descend into the city, following the path of pilgrims who have arrived here for centuries. Together, we visit the pilgrim office, receive the Testimonium, and continue to St. Peter’s Basilica, the great symbolic end of this road to Rome.
