Cammino Materano

Description

Discover the hidden soul of Southern Italy on a Cammino Materano guided tour from Bari to Matera.

This is a journey through a quieter Italy, where time seems to soften, traditions still shape daily life, and every stone carries a story.

Over eight days, we walk from the vibrant coastal city of Bari toward Matera, one of Italy’s most extraordinary historic cities. Along the way, the Cammino Materano leads us through the landscapes of Puglia and Basilicata, following shepherd trails, country lanes, and ancient paths once used by pilgrims, farmers, and merchants.

We walk beneath olive trees, across open wheat fields, and over sunlit limestone plateaus scented with wild herbs. The land feels alive here, shaped by wind, water, work, and memory.

In Altamura, known for its bread, we discover a town of Romanesque stone, lively streets, and deep local pride. In Gravina in Puglia, the route brings us above dramatic canyons, across historic bridges, and into one of the most striking landscapes of the journey.

Then comes Matera.

Carved into stone and rising from the ravine, Matera feels almost suspended in time. Its Sassi, ancient cave dwellings and churches built into the rock, are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once overlooked, Matera is celebrated for its powerful beauty, its human story, and its unforgettable sense of place.

This is not simply a walk across Southern Italy. It is a pilgrimage through living history, shaped by landscape, food, hospitality, and the quiet strength of the people who call this land home.

With Spanish Steps, the Cammino Materano is carefully guided, thoughtfully paced, and fully supported, allowing you to experience the journey with depth, ease, and wonder.
