To Finis Terrae, the Edge of the Earth
Some pilgrimages do not end at the cathedral. The Camino Finisterre walk continues beyond Santiago de Compostela, leading west toward the Atlantic and the legendary edge of the world.
For centuries, pilgrims continued beyond Santiago de Compostela, following the setting sun toward the Atlantic. Their destination was Finisterre, once believed to be the western edge of the known world, and Muxía, where legend tells that the Virgin Mary arrived by stone boat to encourage Saint James in his mission.
This 118 kilometer journey from Santiago to the coast is a Camino in its own right.
The Camino Finisterre walk
We begin at the cathedral in Santiago and step quickly into the Galician countryside. Oak forests, high plateaus, quiet farming villages, and stone hamlets lead us steadily west. The path feels spacious and contemplative, far less traveled than the routes leading into Santiago.
As we approach the ocean, the landscape opens dramatically. In Muxía, we stand at the Sanctuary of A Barca on a rocky peninsula shaped by wind and sea. The mythical stones of the Virgin’s boat remain here, and the Atlantic stretches endlessly before us.
From Muxía, we follow coastal trails southward to Finisterre. Beaches, headlands, fishing villages, and the constant sound of waves accompany us. This Camino Finisterre walk culminates at the lighthouse of Cape Finisterre, where cliffs plunge into the Atlantic and the sun sinks into open water. For many, this moment feels like completion in its purest form.
At the end of this Camino, you may receive the Fisterrana, the certificate acknowledging your walk to Finis Terrae.
